An Internal Family Systems Approach In Eating Disorders presented by Dr. Alexia Rothman
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based model of psychotherapy that provides a compassionate, respectful, non-pathologizing approach to understanding the organization and functioning of the human psyche. It provides therapists with a powerful and effective set of tools for empowering clients with a wide range of clinical profiles to heal the wounded and burdened parts of their internal systems, resulting in increased internal harmony, symptom reduction, and improved functioning. This workshop will provide an overview of the IFS model, including the components of the psyche and their functions and interrelationships, as well as an in-depth discussion of the conceptualization and treatment of Eating Disorders through an IFS lens.

Co-Sponsored Event with Brenau University - When Words Are Not Enough: Weaving Embodied Strategies into Psychotherapy for Individuals with Eating Disorders and Trauma Presented by Dr. Madeline Altabe and Susan Kleinman
Individuals with eating disorders tend to ignore the experience of living in their body – an aspect of body image. These individuals displace their attention on emotionally driven behaviors that provide them with an illusion of control. Implementing therapeutic methods that process from the experience of what emerges expressively can provide clinical depth that words alone cannot reach. The experiential clarity inherent in physicalizing and amplifying interoceptive experiences allows insights to spring to the surface, thereby increasing understanding of what is driving the disordered coping mechanisms. Attendees will develop a greater understanding, including a theoretical perspective, of body image and body-based therapies such as Dance and Movement Therapy. They will become attuned to the body language the client brings to the therapy space. Most essentially, they will come away with methods to weave embodied strategies into their own clinical work.

Story as Medicine in the Treatment of Eating Disorders - 6 CEs
Presenters: Anita Johnston, Ph.D.
For eons, ancient traditions in cultures across the world have used storytelling and parables for teaching certain truths and for healing. Without understanding the scientific mechanisms of the brain and why this approach worked, these indigenous cultures knew important teachings would be retained since analogies and metaphors presented in the form of a story were likely to leave lasting impressions. Behaviors would change, and the stories would be remembered and passed along. Recently, modern science has developed technology that gives us a glimpse into brain functioning, allowing us to see how these processes work and how they can be effective in generating insight that can lead to healing.
Jungian analyst, Marian Woodman, once said, “Eating disorders are a failure of the imagination,” because those suffering are unable to perceive their struggles with eating as related to other aspects of their lives. They simply cannot see the connections between what they are doing with food and what’s happening for the rest of their lives.
Storytelling cultivates imaginative processes by creating living pictures in the eye of the mind. It is this inner sight (insight) that enables clients to perceive remote associations between things which initially appear to be separate and unrelated, allowing them to recognize how their eating behavior is related to their thoughts, feelings, memories, or relationships.
The story, through the language of metaphor, activates aspects of the brain that are better able to see subtle, hidden connections, and in doing so can transform mental blocks into breakthroughs, helping those struggling with eating disorders move beyond a literal view of what they are doing with food towards a deeper understanding of the changes they need to make in their lives.
This lively, interactive presentation will present traditional healing stories, applicable research, and case studies to demonstrate how storytelling can be used in eating disorder treatment to develop frustration tolerance, encourage skill building, address resistance, and discover the deeper meaning embedded in eating disorder thoughts and behaviors.

Nutrition Healing of Trauma-Based Food Relationships: A Neurosequential Model - CEs Pending
Presenters: Tammy Beasley, MS, RDN, CEDS-S; Julie Holland, MHA, CEDS-S
Description of Presentation: In the treatment of eating disorders and disordered eating, the collaborative relationship between the registered dietitian/nutritionist (RDN) and the therapist is an integral part of the treatment process. Equally important, and perhaps even more so, is the relationship between clinician and client. If relationship itself is critical to healing, the impact of our clients’ daily relationship with their bodies and the food chosen to nourish them deserves consideration. In clients with a history of disordered eating, the lack of relational intimacy is an integral part of the trauma-based experiences leading to an eating disorder. The scarcity of relational intimacy leads to relational hunger. Therefore, the lack of relational intimacy with the body itself and the food that sustains it can parallel the same trauma-based wounds, and the need for trauma-informed healing, that is part of eating disorder recovery. This presentation explores the role of nutrition healing through the team collaboration between both RD and therapist using a bottom-up approach inherent to trauma-informed treatment. This Neurosequential model, presented using clinical examples and practical analogies, recognizes the principles of neuroplasticity and the polyvagal theory framework and offers healing benefits that can transform a foundationally “stuck” food pattern into hope for sustained recovery.
